Postpartum infections

Postpartum infections Reviewed by the BabyCenter Medical Advisory Board Highlights What are postpartum infections? What are the symptoms of a postpartum infection? What should I do if I think I may have an infection? What are postpartum infections?Your recovering body may be vulnerable to certain infections after you have a baby. The most common is endometritis (an infection of the endometrium or lining of the uterus), but infections of the breast, of wounds incurred during childbirth, or of the urinary tract can also occur. It strikes about 1 in 20 nursing mothers and is more likely to occur if you have cracked nipples. (It's unlikely that a non-nursing mom will get mastitis, though it can happen when her breasts become engorged before her milk dries up.)If you had a c-section, you may develop an infection at the site of your incision. (After a vaginal birth, you may have one at the site of an episiotomy or tear, though this is uncommon.) Also be on the lookout for signs of a urinary tract infection, particularly if you had a catheter in your bladder at any time. 1 2 Previous Next Show All
